What Is An AGM Battery?
A question we often hear is, “what’s the difference between a traditional battery and an AGM battery?”
Both types of batteries are filled with sulfuric acid, but they differ in their internal construction. In a traditional battery, the sulfuric acid is free to move around inside the battery case and the battery requires regular additions of water to keep the battery plates fully submerged in the acid. These batteries must also be mounted upright to prevent the acid from spilling.
In contrast, an AGM battery has fiberglass mats inside that absorb the acid—hence the acronym Absorbent Glass Mat. These batteries are essentially spill-proof and maintenance-free, which makes them ideal for motorcycles, although they’re becoming more popular in automobiles as well. AGM batteries also have a longer lifespan than traditional batteries, but they do have some drawbacks.
The Drawbacks of AGM Batteries
AGM batteries are much more susceptible to damage from overcharging. A typical trickle charger that’s used to keep a traditional battery charged may damage an AGM battery. If you need to keep an AGM battery charged during periods where it’s not being used, it’s important to purchase a charger that’s made exclusively for these types of batteries. They’re also very averse to being drained to a complete discharge. This will likely result in the battery’s failure, so it’s important to keep them properly charged.
All in all, AGM batteries have their advantages, but it’s important to keep them properly maintained and use them under the right circumstances.
